Question: Do Anti-Depressants work?
( Back )
Answer #1:
These things get marketed only after testing to see if they work. The response rate is generally around 80%.Answer #2:
i can say from personal experience that yes anti-depressants do work, it can take anything from 2 weeks to 3 months for them to kick in but you will feel better. I have been on them for 18 months now and they have really helped me.Answer #3:
They can work, if you let them. They can make you feel happy but only if you are in the right mood to be happy. Sounds silly but a tablet can't make you think of feel any different, they can only increase your emotional feelings. My Mum took anti-depressants for 3 years but rarely they would actually make her feel happy for a short period of time. My Mum felt more depressed for the fact she needed a drug to make her feel happy. But drugs can affect people in different ways. I'd keep taking the tablets and see if you have seen a change in yourself.
Answer #4:
Yup. I was sceptical, but I feel much more like 'myself' than I have for a long time. I've got my life back and it's awesome!Answer #5:
mmm, I take Zoloft and all It does is give you a high for 5 hours..I guess it helps, not really tho,
Antidepressants have horrible side effects...
Counseling wont work for me either,
it just freaks me out
Answer #6:
Everyone is different. A lot of people really need them and there is no shame in that any more than as if you needed insulin for diabetes. You have a chemical imbalance, plain and simple. There are a lot of different meds on the market, sometimes it takes a while to find the right one. They often take a while- weeks- to kick in.Answer #7:
While anti depressants don't take away any root cause of the depression, it does allow you to deal with things on a more level footing. I was very reluctant to go to my doctor for pills as I thought it was a cop out somehow, but knew I couldn't go on feeling the way I did. It was when a friend said if you were anaemic, you'd take iron, or needed insulin cos your diabetic, it was no different from taking a pill to help raise serotonin, which is often lower with people who suffer with depression, I went to my gp's. It took the pills about 4 weeks to work and I was on them for about 6months. I've done this twice and had no problems coming off them when I felt ready to.Answer #8:
A general answer to this question would be, yes, they work. However they do not work for everybody.First thing you should do is set up an appointment with a psychiatrist. This is not the same as a psychologist. Both do a great service, but the psychiatrist is a medical doctor and would be the one that could prescribe medication. Many patients will use both in conjunction with each other.
The question you need to ask yourself is, what is making me depressed. Most people with true depression issues cannot answer that question. Although that is by no means always the case. If you can you may just want to work on what your issue happens to be.
Lets talk treatment options. First and foremost, nobody wants to take pills. The reality is some need to take medication to help them lead a "normal", comfortable life. There is absolutely no shame in taking medication. If you only knew the percentage of people taking psych medications. The good thing about anti-depressants is that most are made for long term use. Most are very easy on your body over a long period of time. They usually need to build up in you system before you get the best results. The time varies depending what medication you are taking. On average best results would show after about a month.
Alternative treatment options are sometimes the best when it comes to depression. This is just my opinion. Exercising on a regular basis, eating healthy, not staying inside, but enjoying the sun, getting involved in healthy recreations, and surrounding yourself with good people is the best treatment in the world. All this after you see the doc!
To sum up my answer, talk to your doc and see what they think your best option is. Can't hurt to go and talk about treatment options.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Answer #9:
Make sure you get the right type. Some will make you go really mental or you'll wind up in hospital with all sorts of mad stuff going on. Personally I tried them all and nope, they don't work.I find it easier to pretend everything is fine and remain dead inside. It's only a short existence after all, why bother?
