Excerpt from Session by Jeffrey Guterman, Ph.D. www.jeffreyguterman.com Assistant Professor, Counseling Department www.barry.edu/counseling Barry University www.barry.edu on March 20, "Advanced Techniques for Solution-Focused Counseling" at the American Counseling Association's 2010 Conference in Pittsburgh. Video by Gemma Philage. Verbatim Transcript: I see that the approach in solution-focused counseling tends to be brief. Why? The brevity is a logical consequence of its conceptualization. Because of how it views humans. Basically they work very simply and well. Like bicycle chains. Sometimes they get a bit stuck or off track. And in such cases they need a minor adjustment. But if you get too involved in how you view the problem then you run the risk of exacerbating it and actually becoming part of the problem. So the idea is getting in and out quickly without the client knowing you were there, sort of like brain surgery.
