Queen s Counsel

In the UK we have two types of Lawyers, they are Solicitors and Barristers. The subject pictured is a Barrister, in fact he is a senior Barrister or Queens Counsel, also known as a QC or silk. Queens Counsel are often referred to as Silks' because when you are promoted to a Queens Counsel your court robe is then made of silk. Solicitors do all of the general law work and Barristers are the specialist advocates who argue the case for a solicitor's client in court. Barristers generally specialise in a certain area of law. Solicitors often approach a Barrister for their opinion on the merits of a case, hence the old saying 'in my opinion' . A Barristers Opinion is a written document outlining the pros and cons of a case before it goes to trial. The picture was taken during the annual Judges procession from Westminster Abbey to the Houses of Parliament to mark the begining of the legal year in England and Wales.
